Thirteen villages have been identified for community-based village fences due to the on-going human-elephant conflict in the Anuradhapura District. Currently, community awareness programs have been conducted in 10 villages and 9 community based organisations have been established to maintain the village fences and sustain the effort made by ESCAMP. Construction of the fence at Helambawewa in Mahawilachchiya DS Division was completed in August, and is being well maintained by the villagers with emphasis on ensuring its proper function.
