An interactive workshop was held on 20th December 2019 at Grand Monarch Hotel, Thalawathugoda, Battaramulla with the patronage of the Ecosystem Conservation and Management Project (ESCAMP). The key participants were representatives of stakeholder institutions, environment organizations and local NGOs.
The main objective of this workshop was to obtain views, comments and suggestions on the draft Land Management Plan (LMP) developed for Hurulu -Kaudulla and Kantale (HKK) landscape. This management plan was developed by an local expert team who leaded by an international expert who as vast experiences in LMP in the region.
This area covers 520,000 ha in Anuradapura, Pollonnaruwa and Trincomallee District. Around 51% of the landscape consists of natural forests that includes National Parks and Forest Reserves managed by Forest Department and Wild Life Department. In addition to that fairly large extent of Protected Areas managed by Coastal Conservation Department and Archaeological Department are also located within this landscape.
At the workshop all participants were stressed that, he importance of accepting this plan as a National Policy and Government bodies dedication and adhering to this concept in implementing their sectoral plans. The management plan validation work will be held in 3rd week of January and final plan will be available in end of the same month 2020.
